I never wanted to have to write this post, but over the last two weeks two of best journalists of all-time passed away.
Tim Russert was the political everyman. He treated his guests to a tough but fair interview and always got his facts straight. He epitomized class while remaining tough. He was one of my favorite political analysts because he was always right in his predictions and cut through all of the crap with clear, simple insight that informed and entertained. He was respected by his peers and loved by his fans. It is ironic that with one of the biggest elections in our country's history this autumn, we will be without Tim Russert; a kind, gracious man who remained upbeat through it all. Tim will be missed by all; November will never be the same.
In the age before "Boo-yah", The Swami, and talk radio diminished the class and grace of sports journalism, there was Jim McKay. Jim was always in his element, whether it was covering the Kentucky Derby or barrel jumping the classy McKay always enjoy what he was doing. He was a broadcaster's "everyman". We all remember how he handle the tragic events of the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich with class and poise while having to tell the world that all eleven of the Israeli hostages were killed. He showed us the joys of the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. He along with Howard Cosell, Roone Arledge, and Chris Schenkel showed us all how broadcasting could be done with class instead of crass. Sadly now with the passing of Jim McKay; they're all gone.
